GEMS Wellington School Granted Prestigious World Class HPL School Status
GEMS Wellington School–Qatar (WSQ) has recently been accredited as a World Class High Performance Learning (HPL) school. This prestigious recognition places WSQ among an elite group of schools globally, affirming its commitment to fostering high-performing learners.
Three years ago, the school adopted the HPL philosophy, grounded on extensive cognitive science research. HPL is built on the aspirational belief that every child can achieve highly. The framework categorises essential characteristics into ACPs (‘How we think’) and VAAs (‘How we behave’), which are nurtured by WSQ’s highly skilled educators through a rich curriculum and a supportive school community.
Since implementing HPL, there has been a remarkable increase in WSQ students’ confidence in their abilities. This boost in self-assurance has directly contributed to the outstanding academic results students consistently achieve.
In addition, WSQ has been awarded the ‘Wellbeing in Schools Award’ by Optimus Education. This award supports schools in creating a culture where mental health can flourish, demonstrating WSQ’scommitment to promoting wellbeing as an integral part of daily school life.
The Wellbeing Award process, spanning 16 months, involved rigorous self-assessment and collaborative planning. The accolade underscores the school’s dedication to embedding a culture that values the happiness and emotional welfare of all community members.
The Wellbeing Framework at WSQ is comprehensive. It includes actively promoting staff wellbeing, fostering a positive culture of emotional wellbeing and mental health, providing continuous professional development for staff, engaging the entire school community, committing to a clear strategy for wellbeing, and establishing supportive networks and partnerships.
The leadership has also implemented clear policies and practices that support emotional wellbeing and mental health. The school environment is welcoming, with features like wide corridors, sensory rooms, and a staff wellbeing garden. WSQ’s personal development curriculum, including programmes from The Happy Confident Company and Upstrive Education, is engaging and supportive across all school phases.
The impact of WSQ’s wellbeing initiatives is evident. Student attendance has increased to 96 percent, and staff retention rates have risen to over 90 percent. Enhanced student voice and parental engagement are seen through innovative programmes. Staff development now includes a greater focus on wellbeing, with continuous professional development in this area.
WSQ’s dual recognition as a World Class HPL school and recipient of the Wellbeing in Schools Award highlights its commitment to academic excellence and holistic wellbeing. These achievements reflect the school’s dedication to creating an environment where both students and staff can thrive.
