Eileen Miles
Head of English
My name is Eileen Miles and I became Head of English at GEMS Wellington in August 2024.
I grew up in Liverpool, famous for its music, culture and something, I’m afraid to say, I know nothing about… football. I graduated from Liverpool John Moore’s University in 2008 with a BA(Hons) in English and Imaginative Writing, and began teaching at a college of further education whilst studying for my PGCE at the University of Central Lancashire. Having been unable to quench my thirst for knowledge, I furthered my education, gaining a Master’s Degree in English at Edge Hill University in 2013, the same year I began my first role in Education Leadership.
Before arriving in Qatar, I taught English in the North West of England for fifteen years, eleven as Curriculum Leader, specialising in GCSE, Functional Skills and Level 3 Literature.
I believe that language and literature are at the heart of shaping critical thinkers, empathetic individuals, and confident communicators. I aim to ignite a passion for reading, writing, and storytelling in every student. My goal is to inspire curiosity and lifelong engagement with the written word. English education equips students with skills that extend beyond the classroom: the ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and analyse the world around them.
Beyond my role as an educator, I am also an educational content creator and aspiring author. Developing accessible, innovative resources for both students and teachers allows me to bridge classroom practice with creativity. My work as an aspiring author deepens my understanding of the craft of writing and reinforces the importance of storytelling as a powerful tool for communication and connection. This dual role helps me stay connected to the broader educational community while continually bringing fresh ideas and insights to my teaching and leadership practices.
